SHORT BIO

The Sound Gypsies are an Indiana-based Americana and heartland rock duo formed by longtime collaborators Frank Johnson and Sam Koultourides. Drawing on classic songwriting traditions, their music explores freedom, redemption, resilience, and the emotional complexities of relationships.  Over the past six years, they've written more than 40 songs together, developing a body of work rooted in classic songwriting traditions rather than modern trend cycles.  The Sound Gypsies approach recording as documentation — capturing songs as they evolve rather than chasing algorithms or moments.

Their debut recordings feature veteran longtime members of John Mellencamp’s touring bandDane Clark, Jon Gunnell,  Troye Kinnett, as well as Sandy Williams—recorded at Static Shack Studios and engineered by Alan Johnson.

CURRENT NEWS

The Sound Gypsies recently completed recording eight original songs at Static Shack Studios in Indianapolis. Three tracks have been mastered, including "Midnight In The USA," with "You Can Still Come Home" scheduled as the next release.

WHY THE SOUND GYPSIES?

The Sound Gypsies believe great songs still matter. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of heartland rock, Americana, and classic rock, the duo focuses on music that speaks to real experiences rather than trends—songs built to connect with listeners today and still resonate years from now.

MUSIC

“Midnight In The USA” is a driving rock anthem that connects personal struggle with a wider social moment—built for late-night drives, protest playlists, and sync placements needing urgency and heart.

"We're interested in songs that last longer than trends. The goal isn't to chase a moment—it's to write something that still means something twenty years from now." ” - The Sound Gypsies

Jan. 6 riots inspired South Bend band's 'Midnight in the USA'

• Musicians Frank Johnson and Sam Koultourides wrote the protest song “Midnight in the USA” after the events of Jan. 6, 2021.

"They decided in the fall to record "Midnight in the USA" at an Indianapolis studio with studio musicians. Many had performed with John Mellencamp, such as drummer Dane Clark, keyboardist Troye Kinnett and bassist Jon E Gunnell, members of Mellencamp's band."  - Kathy Borlik, South Bend Tribune
